Impact Story: Learning by Doing

This month, we're highlighting two organizations that are inspiring curiosity, building confidence, and proving that some of life's greatest lessons happen when we roll up our sleeves and create.

WorkshopMT’s mobile classroom was supported by a Community Grant through Whitefish Community Foundation.

Hands-on learning has a unique way of bringing people together. It encourages curiosity, builds confidence, and reminds us that growth often begins by trying something new.

This month, we're highlighting two organizations that are inspiring curiosity, building confidence, and proving that some of life's greatest lessons happen when we roll up our sleeves and create.

The Making Place: Building Skills, Creativity, and Community

Whether someone wants to learn woodworking, repair a bicycle, sew, or try a new craft for the first time, The Making Place is creating opportunities for hands-on learning in the Flathead Valley.

A 2026 Community Grant is supporting the organization's shared workspace, classes, and tool library, making specialized equipment and creative instruction more accessible to people of all ages and experience levels.

The Making Place is more than a workshop. It's a welcoming space where neighbors teach neighbors, ideas become reality, and confidence grows with every project completed. By removing barriers to tools, instruction, and creative exploration, the organization empowers community members to develop practical skills while building meaningful connections with one another.

WorkshopMT: Taking Learning on the Road

For many students, the most memorable classroom doesn't have four walls.

WorkshopMT brings hands-on learning directly to schools through its mobile classroom programs, giving students opportunities to explore science, engineering, technology, and skilled trades in engaging, interactive ways.

Supported by a 2026 Community Grant, these mobile programs spark curiosity through real-world experiences that encourage students to problem-solve, experiment, and discover new interests. By bringing specialized equipment and instruction directly into communities, WorkshopMT helps ensure more students have access to high-quality educational opportunities, regardless of where they live.

These experiences don't simply teach technical skills—they inspire creativity, collaboration, and the confidence to tackle new challenges long after the workshop ends.

Creating Stronger Communities

Established in 2000, the Community Grant program is our longest-running initiative and has awarded nearly $3.5 million to local nonprofits to support programs and projects in Northwest Montana. Funded by Whitefish Community Foundation's Circle of Giving, our dedicated group of donors who contribute $5,000 or more annually, these grants support local nonprofits and the broader mission of the Foundation.

Thanks to the generosity of Circle of Giving donors, organizations like The Making Place and WorkshopMT are helping people of all ages discover new skills, explore their creativity, and strengthen the communities they call home.
